There are two very different schools of thought about historical fiction. One school rationalizes that it is easy to write a genre, the plot already exists, everything you have to do is put it in their own words. The second school says that this genre is very difficult to work, much of the story line is fixed, the author needs to weave his characters into the fabric of history facts.

I am a member of the latter group, I think a good historical fiction is very difficult writing. John H. Manhold has done a magnificent job with El Tigre, combining speed action in a very well researched and historically accurate canvas.

El Tigre is in the early and mid 1800s and chronicles the life of Johann Heinrich von Manfred, born of Prussian aristocracy to the age of 16 are without friends, family, or a country following an unfortunate incident at the prestigious military academy he attended.

We Johann on his odyssey of discovery. It takes very little time before young Johann has his first adventure, assisting a group of gypsies who are being blackmailed by an unscrupulous mayor. So it's to Spain where he joined in support of Don Carlos, the real pretender to the throne. He may be young, but has a natural instinct for the art of war, and quickly proves its value. Woe to the cause becomes a default, your employer is killed, and it seems that Don Carlos had a hand in it. Once again he returns to his search of nomads.

Europe appears to offer little in the way Johann Shrine chooses the potential wealth of the New World.

From Florida and Georgia, Johann first becomes a jailer Indians, and soon learns the harsh reality of the culture clash between settlers and indigenous groups. Unhappy to be part of this lack of humanity that moves along with Texas, and once again becomes involved in a dispute, this time with the creation of the Republic of Texas. Problems with the Indians, problems with Mexico, the problems with Spain, and even the problems with the United States, leading to frustration and bloodshed. Johan however has by now become a veteran of conflicts, and quickly made a name for itself not only for their fighting ability but also his selflessness, en route to winning the respect of everyone, and the nickname El Tigre (The Panther). No is long before the tales of El Tigre spread throughout the country.

His latest trip is to California, where he discovers ranching, romance and gold. Has found finally found his Shangri-La?

While I am not a big fan of the books about the Wild West, Manhold has written a fascinating novel, and that will keep glued to the pages. What I admire is his attention to historical detail. This book has clearly been a very good and widely researched. That combined with a history moving at break neck pace this book should appeal to a broad audience.

What are some good historical fiction?

Hi guys! I am in need of a good book and historical fiction preference. I like books about Holacaust and the Salem witch trials. so please on behalf of some of those issues! and if you will, a summary would be nice! thanks!

A break with Charity Ann Rinaldi is a good book about the Salem witch trials. Witch Child by Celia Rees is also quite good.
