Dead Until Dark, the first book in the series of Southern Vampire by Charlaine Harris, is in Bon Temps, Louisiana. It is here at a local bar called Merlotte, we meet with our heroine, Sookie Stackhouse. Sookie is a waitress at Merlotte and on the surface appears to be the typical girl next door. However, they soon discover that Sookie has a special talent.

In general, urban fantasy readers will find this first novel the series to be very entertaining. Although the entire book is under 300 pages Charlaine Harris has done a decent job in fleshing out the major and maintenance tight plot. The book works as an independent piece of literature, but, fortunately, is only the beginning of what promises to be a great trip.
