However, they soon discover that Sookie has a special talent.
She can hear people's thoughts.
Many of the villagers have heard of his talent, but most they do not. That's fine with Sookie because it is difficult for her to concentrate on getting his orders directly, while blocking the thoughts of other people. But one night, a stranger appears at the bar. Sookie initially attracted to him for 2 reasons: he is new in town and he is a vampire.
Bill Compton, the vampire in question, has returned to its roots. When I lived and died before the civil war, lived in that area. He had spent several years as a solo vampire and now has again become better known.

However, Sookie does not care because she has found no only someone who truly cares for her, she also found that when any bill is not necessary to maintain the mental guard. Mind You see, Sookie can not read vampire. They are closed to it. To Sookie is a blessing because sometimes finds it difficult to protect other people's thoughts. So he is delighted she can be herself in any bill.
However, due to their special gift came to her by the local sheriff, who wants his help in solving of several recent murders in the area. Sookie agrees to "listen" to employers in Merlotte to see if you can identify the murderer. Coincidentally, she also asked Bill to accompany him to a vampire bar in Shreveport owned by one of his friends, Eric. Eric wants Sookie to find out who has been stealing money from the till. Sookie is successful in determining the identity of the thief, but is attacked in the process, and almost killed. The rest of the book is devoted to attempts to Sookie to find the murderer of the city. The final (and the identity of the murderer) are quite surprising. In general, urban fantasy readers will find this first novel the series to be very entertaining. Although the entire book is under 300 pages Charlaine Harris has done a decent job in fleshing out the major and maintenance tight plot. The book works as an independent piece of literature, but, fortunately, is only the beginning of what promises to be a great trip.
It's no wonder that authors like Charlaine Harris frequently top the bestselling urban fantasy and best fantasy stories book lists.
